M2M One – February 2018 Newsletter

M2M One Newsletter – February 2018

Happy New Year!

We hope you had a fantastic holiday and have an exciting 2018 lined up!

As always, we at M2M One appreciate you chosing us as your provider for M2M SIM Cards and Data Plans and look forward to helping you grow your M2M/IoT business over the next 12 months!

In this month’s newsletter we talk about the new cellular IoT networks available from Telstra in Australia, including accessing Cat-M1 with M2M One today and how you can prepare for NB-IoT. We also look at the trade events and exhibitions we have coming up in 2018 and as always give you a quick tip on getting the most out of your Jasper Portal.

  • Telstra Cat-M1 Network Access on M2M One

Telstra launched their Cat-M1 IoT network back in August 2017 enabling devices with Cat-M1 capabilities to access the network anywhere 4GX (B28) coverage was available. This was great, but mainly for developers and R&D houses experimenting with new technology and not something that would affect the wider IoT/M2M community in Australia until these devices became more ubiquitous.

Now there are some commercially available modules and products that use Cat-M1 on the market we wanted to remind customers that M2M One SIM Cards work with Cat-M1 straight out of the box, if you have an M1 capable modem or module in your device you can use your existing SIM cards today without any changes being made.

For more information about Cat-M1 click here

  • Telstra launch NB-IoT Network in Australia

Some of you may have already seen that at CES 2018 in January Telstra officially announced they have turned on NB-IoT capability in major cities and some regional hubs across Australia. This marks the first stage of Telstra’s roll-out of the latest standard in LPWAN technology on the cellular side.

At the moment there are very few NB-IoT compatible devices available and the Telstra NB-IoT network is currently only available on the 1800Mhz frequency but now is the perfect time to begin thinking about your next generation of device.

Each month we bring you tips and tricks for getting the most value out of the M2M Control Centre.

Managing Voice Usage

This month we look at how you can make the most of utilizing voice on your M2M One SIM Cards and how to protect yourself against bill-shock by using Automation Rules.

By default M2M One SIM Cards come with SMS, Voice & International Roaming disabled but these features can be added at any time by our support team.

When you activate voice on your SIM(s) you then have 3 pricing options to choose from – PAYG, 1 Minute Bundle & 10 Minute Bundles. With the 1 & 10 Minute bundles these can be grouped across your account, the same as data plans so if you have 10 x 10 minute bundles you have 100 minutes of voice to use across your devices in a month – Voice pricing is available on our price table

With voice usage M2M One only charge for MO (Mobile Originating) or Outbound voice calling, receiving calls to your SIM is free of charge.

When you have voice available on your SIM we strongly recommend putting protections in place through automation rules, the automation rules allow you to alert or block a SIM if it exceeds a certain level of voice usage in a month.
For example you may have your SIMs in a device that dials in once every day for 1 minute so you expect to use 30-35 minutes of voice per month, you might want to set up a rule that alerts you if you use 60 minutes of voice in a month and suspends the SIM if it uses over 120 minutes of voice.

Voice usage controls are available on page 20-23 of our Jasper Automation Rules guide – Click here to Download

M2M One were pleased to once again participate in one of Australia’s leading ICT and emerging technology events, Connect 2016. Connect took place at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre over the 19th – 20th of April.
Naturally the show was focused on the IoT hype slowly starting to meet reality, with conversations around LPWAN, Smart Cities and LTE for IoT being more about practical deployments than theoretical possibilities. One of the most exciting stands at the show was LX Group who were showing their new modular IoT Core product could be a game changer for companies looking to incorporate multiple wireless technologies into a small simple form factor.
On Tuesday the 19th of April, M2M One & M2M Connectivity hosted a free 25 minute seminar on ‘Developing a Cellular IoT/M2M Solution in Australia’ at the Connect ICT Theatre on the show floor – You can view the slides from this presentation here: http://www.slideshare.net/JamesMack4/m2m-one-m2m-connectivity-developing-a-cellular-iot-or-m2m-solution-in-australia-connect-expo-2016

2. Blog – Thoughts on Connect Expo and CeBIT 2015

M2M One’s most recent blogs review the two main ICT trade shows held this year. From an M2M/IoT exhibitor’s perspective, we present our thoughts on each event in terms of layout, exhibitors. trade show attendance and the effectiveness of the M2M/IoT specific summits and conferences.

In its second year running, Connect Expo 2015 held in Melbourne is improving. The case studies showing practical uses for M2M/IoT was a highlight in the IoT summit, a forum where presentations more often than not tend to be general. Acknowledging the growing importance of M2M/IoT in the ICT space with a dedicated area, Connect Expo will continue this focus with a larger dedicated layout planned for next year.

CeBIT 2015 in Sydney continues to fall short in this regard with a lack of M2M/IoT focus.  Seemingly smaller this year, with fewer M2M/IoT companies exhibiting, we also wonder whether CeBIT’s Olympic Park venue was having this effect.   Hannover Fairs brand new staff are listening to feedback and assure us that 2016 would finally bring an M2M specific area and focus to the CeBIT. The Start-Up section and university technology displays with exciting new developments gets a big tick and so does the conference sessions which CeBIT always does well in organising content.

Welcome to M2M One’s newsletter. This month we introduce our new General Manager, provide updates on the new Voice capability and the status on the new billing platform which we expect to go live by year’s end. We feature a blog on 2G/GSM sunsets and the implications of the closure of 2G networks on our customers using this technology.

This months newsletter features:

  1. Introducing our new General Manager
  2. Network Update – Voice plans
  3. Billing Update – New billing portal
  4. Blog – Sunset of 2G/GSM networks and the implications

1. New General Manager – James Mack

Earlier this month M2M One appointed a new General Manager to help grow the business and take our M2M services to the next level. James has worked in a number of roles in the M2M industry including sales, marketing, channel and strategy. You’ll be hearing more from James as he settles in to the role here at M2M One, for now he wanted to pass a short message on to all our customers and partners.

“I’m exceptionally proud to have been chosen by the directors to lead M2M One forward as the business continues to grow. My goal is to continue to improve and shape M2M One into a company that innovates and expands throughout the IoT & M2M industry.

I’m particularly excited to work closely with all of our customers and find out what we can do to make M2M One the best service provider in Australia. So please feel free to send any feedback on the business and how we can improve to james.mack@m2mone.com.au or connect with me on LinkedIn

2. Network Update – Voice

After the successful implementation of full SMS capability mid June, M2M One is currently working on the next network upgrade – Voice. We advise that the introduction of voice plans on our services has been delayed. However, we are offering the opportunity for customers to test this feature before the official introduction of the Voice upgrade. As well as M2M data, there are M2M application scenarios where voice calls, machine call back, DTMF, and emergency dialing are required across segments like security, automotive, and health care. If you would like to test the Voice feature on M2M One SIM cards, please contact us.

A separate notification email confirming the availability of Voice will be sent to our customers. Voice pricing details will be released when the feature becomes available. We will offer a PAYG (Pay As You Go) rate per second, and bundled rates per minute and per ten minutes.

3. Billing Update – New Billing Portal

We advise that work on our new billing platform continues with the expectation that this will be functional in a pre-release test phase over the coming months.  Throughout this phase, we will be running our existing and new billing platforms in parallel to ensure that when we go live with the new portal it will be fully tested and operational without billing interruptions.

The new billing platform will offer automated invoicing and an integrated payment gateway as just some of the many features available to our customers.  We are confident that our customers will find the new billing portal a timely and easy to understand way of managing your M2M One billing.  The new billing portal with visible current charges and billing history, will keep customers better informed and proactive with their SIM card usage.

4. Blog – Sunset of 2G/GSM network and the implications
