Welcome to M2M One’s October 2018 Newsletter,

Well it’s that time of year has again, a few weeks ago Telstra held its annual Vantage conference and as always it was a very impressive spectacle. There were a lot of very impressive demonstrations this year including a working 5G Hot-spot with constant download speeds over 3000Mbps.

Telstra had its drones on display demonstrating their ability to provide 4G Hot-spots and cellular reception during emergencies, even using cameras to help law enforcement in such times.

M2M One obviously has a focus on the M2M (Machine to Machine) and IoT (Internet of things) industries and hence it is no surprise that one of the most interesting announcement to me was the official launch of Telstra’s NB-IoT (NB-1) network.

Telstra have now launched their NB-IoT network on the Band 28 (700MHz) frequency.  There is also a new mapping tool (available at https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/solutions/internet-of-things/iot-coverage) that shows the current coverage.

Telstra NB-IoT has some very interesting use cases – and will be able to deliver low powered, message style communications. Opening up many new possibilities for battery powered devices, from simple once a day tracking (containers etc) to access controls and data logging all for a very low price.

We’re working closely with Telstra on finalising pricing for NB-IoT as well as M2M One Control centre integration which we expect to be able to release this side of Christmas.

  • Telstra 2100Mhz 3G Shutdown Notice

Telstra has begun to re-farm their 3G 2100MHz Frequency. Current plans are to have the full shutdown completed by March 2019.

What this means is that any devices that are operating exclusively on the 3G 2100MHz frequency will lose connectivity once the towers in their area are switched off.

Why the SHUT DOWN of 2100MHz?

With much of the consumer and business market moving their cellular devices to the LTE (4G & 4GX), only a minuscule proportion of Telstra’s mobile traffic currently operate on the 3G 2100MHz frequency. This frequency is being re-purposed or “re-farmed” to be used by the 4GX network. By doing this Telstra can shift their cellular capacity to where there is stronger customer demand.

What can you do now?

The first step is check if your devices can utilise the 3G 850MHz Band. Often devices enabled for 3G are “Dual-band” which means they can use either 850MHz or 2100MHz. Sometimes devices are ‘pointed’ towards 2100MHz and simply need re-programming for 850MHz operation.

If your devices operate on 3G 850MHz (or are LTE / 4G) then there is nothing to do.

If your device is not capable of using the 3G 850Hz Frequency, you will need to speak to your hardware supplier in order to upgrade your device for 3G 850MHz or preferably for LTE (4G/4GX). In this case M2M One advises devices enabled for 700MHz (Band 28) & 1800MHz (Band 3).

  • M2M One Event Report – All Energy 2018

M2M One were again excited to be a part of the 10th Annual All Energy and Waste Expo in Melbourne this October.  As always there was a heavy focus on Clean and Renewable Energy with a huge array of International manufacturers of solar powers panels and inverters; However, it was truly great to see a large number of local Australian companies and installers presenting their wares, many of them already partnering with M2M One for their SIM Connectivity needs.

A recurring conversation we had at the show was from customers having issues with independent remote access to their inverters/solar panels; This is a common issue we see in the market.  The native connectivity these devices generally come with from the manufacturers is WiFi and the installers are expected to connect the inverter to the customers local WiFi.

The problem: 
Have you ever had an issue connecting to a local WiFi network?  Add to that the complications that you have no control over said network.  If the network goes down, or the password is changed etc then you have no way to contact your device and get the data out.  In a business where this data is what you are selling it becomes a huge problem!

This problem is not exclusive to the Energy industry – This is true of all devices deployed in the market that are connected to a network which you have no control over.

The Solution:
Luckily there is a fairly simple solution.  A cellular router (a selection are available from our sister company www.m2mconnectivity.com.au) and an M2M One SIM card.
M2M One offer a number of plans that can help you maintain independent control of your devices in the field – If you would like to have a conversation about this please reach out and we will be happy to help.

How to create an automation rule to manage excess usage on a SIMThis month we look at using the powerful Automation Rules in CISCO Jasper to suspend a SIM card using excessive data with the option to reactivate the SIM if needed, instead of needing to contact M2M One Support.

When you log into the control centre select Automation from the home page

From the automation rules screen click on + Create New button to create a new automation rule

From here select Usage Monitoring as the rule category then select Cycle to Date Data Usage to create a new rule that will be triggered on data usage in a billing month. The example below shows you the correct set-up for triggering a rule to Deactivate a SIM that has used over 1MB of data in a billing month. With this rule when a SIM gets deactivated, if you need to use it again in the month you can simply change the SIM status in the control centre back to Activated to use it again – No need to get M2M One to unblock it.

This month we’re inviting you to join us and the IoT Alliance of Australia at the inaugural IoT Impact conference at Sydney University of Technology in September.
We’re also talking about Telstra device certification and how it affects your M2M One SIM service, how to manage your IP Address in control centre and a small update on NB-IoT testing.

  • NB-IoT SIM Trial Update

The Telstra NB-IoT test network can now be accessed on all M2M One SIM cards using the telstra.internet APN

The NB-IoT test network is still currently only available for use on compatible NB-IoT LTE B3 modules as B28 coverage has not yet started (expecting in the next 6 months)

While Telstra are still in testing and have yet to confirm a commercial ‘messaging’ model for NB-IoT transactions using the NB-IoT network will be rated as traditional data and charged according to our standard rates and terms.

  • Telstra Certification and M2M One SIMs

Recently we’ve had a number of customers building new product ask us how Telstra’s certification process affects their device usage with M2M One.

To use the M2M One network in Australia your device needs to meet the following requirements:

  • 3G devices must support 850Mhz (Telstra NextG)
  • 4G/LTE devices must support either B3 or B28 (4GX) – Ideally your device should support both
  • All devices must have Australian RCM Approval – We recommend using a registered Australian testing laboratory like Comtest

As you can see Telstra certification is not a requirement to utilize our SIM cards. However, a Telstra approved M2M/IoT device has been thoroughly tested by Telstra for use on their network and will be supported much quicker when M2M One engage Telstra support on your behalf as they have a basic working knowledge of the device.

Managing SIM IP Addressing

This month we look at the various IP address options available using M2M One SIM Cards.

Dynamic NAT IP – APNs: telstra.m2m & telstra.internet

If you are using our standard internet access services your active SIM cards will be issued with a dynamic IP address behind a NAT Firewall meaning you are unable to initiate communication directly with this SIM using the IP address.

If your SIM card initiates contact with your host server first then you can manage bi-directional communications over the active session.

To find out the current IP of an active SIM card click on the ICCID of the SIM in the Services List and scroll down to the Current Session section


Private Static IP – APNs: m2mone.com.au & m2mone.ipx

For customers using our Private Static IP service or IPX (Click here for more information) your SIM cards will be allocated a static IP address from your registered pool of IPs. This IP will not change even a SIM session is terminated and restarted, meaning you can directly address your SIM cards using the same IP every time.

To find the allocated static IP of your SIM card simply look at the IPX Address field in the Services List (This field is only populated if you are purchasing IPX services from M2M One)

Welcome to M2M One’s July Newsletter,

In this month’s newsletter we invite you to join us at Security 2018 at the Melbourne Convention Centre to talk about the latest security innovations in IoT & M2M. We’ll also be at the Australian Vending Machine Expo talking to customers about how our SIMs are supporting the vending industry across Australia.

With Telstra starting to tune down their 2100Mhz 3G network (See our previous newsletter) we’ve had lots of questions from customers about how to make sure their devices are built for the longest possible shelf life when using M2M One SIM Cards.

Telstra’s primary 3G frequency and the one they market as Next G is 850Mhz, while they do use 2100Mhz for additional capacity in populated urban areas now the majority of consumer devices are on LTE they have started to shut down 2100Mhz across Australia, as we previously advised.

Telstra’s primary frequency on LTE is B28 (700Mhz) and this is what they are marketing as 4GX in the consumer space. This will also be the frequency they run IoT technologies on (Cat-M1 & NB-IoT) in the long term. The B28 4G network has been built from rural Australia inwards so wherever you see rural 4G coverage it will more than likely be on B28.
Telstra also use B3 (1800Mhz) which was used for the early LTE networks deployed in major urban areas, this network is also being built outwards into rural areas for capacity and load balance.

For the maximum coverage, capacity and lifespan with M2M One SIM cards we strongly recommend a 850Mhz 3G & dual B28/B3 LTE modem.

  • NB-IoT SIM Trial SIM Cards

M2M One are now able to offer limited trial SIMs for testing compatible NB-IoT devices, these SIM cards come in Standard, Micro & Nano form factors and are limited to 3 per customer.

There are some limitations to the current implementation of NB-IoT which need to be considered

  • These SIMs only work on the Telstra NB-IoT network and have no access to 3G, 4G or Cat-M1 at present
  • NB-IoT is currently only available on B3 (1800Mhz)
  • Modems and Modules must specifically be capable of NB-IoT communication
  • Coverage is limited to major cities at this time
  • NB-IoT does not support SMS or Voice

  • Support for Madison Technologies Privonet customers

At present M2M One SIM cards can access the full Telstra network for 3G, 4G/LTE and Cat-M1, while the NB-IoT network is still undergoing testing and integration M2M One can not provision existing SIM cards onto NB-IoT.
We will have access to NB-IoT enabled SIM cards shortly but will need to send you a new physical SIM card to utilize the network.

Troubleshooting SIM Performance – Diagnostics Tool

This month we look at how to utilize the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper for some quick insights into SIM performance.

When you run the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper it checks 4 elements:

  • Provisioning
  • SIM/Device
  • Network Connection
  • IP/Internet

Below is a quick guide to troubleshoot failures for each section:

Provisioning Failed – When you see this status it means your SIM card is simply not provisioned in a state that allows network activity in CISCO Jasper. This error will occur if your SIM cards are in any other state apart from Activated, Activation Ready or Test Ready. If you see this error, simply change the status of your SIM card in CISCO Jasper to the correct SIM State.

SIM/Device Failed – This error appears when the SIM is in a usable state in CISCO Jasper but is blocked at a network level, this typically happens when a SIM on a CAP plan has hit its data limit for the month or there has been a provisioning error at the M2M One side. If you see this error contact support@m2mone.com.au for immediate help.

Network Connection Failed – This error means that the SIM is provisioned correctly but can’t register onto the mobile network, this is typically caused by the following:

  • No power to the device
  • Incorrect frequency bands for the mobile network (Example no 850Mhz 3G for Telstra)
  • No mobile coverage in area
  • SIM card incorrectly inserted or SIM reader damaged
When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au
  1. Check power to the device, if the device is powered try cycling the power to the modem
  2. Check you have the supported mobile frequencies on your device and in your location
  3. Check our coverage map to see if you have coverage in your area
  4. Test the SIM in a mobile phone to see if it registers
  5. Reinsert the SIM and check the contacts on the SIM reader

IP/Internet Failed – This error means that the SIM has been able to register on the mobile network but can’t pass IP/Data traffic. This is typically caused by the following:

  • Incorrect or misspelled APN in the device
  • Limited power to the modem
  • Limited signal strength
  • Incorrect ports or sockets open on device
  • IPX Address incorrectly configured (IPX customers only)
When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au
  1. Check the APN(s) in the device are spelt correctly
  2. Check signal strength on the device
  3. Check power to the device
  4. Send any necessary SMS commands to force a modem reboot

In this month’s newsletter we talk about the new cellular IoT networks available from Telstra in Australia, including accessing Cat-M1 with M2M One today and how you can prepare for NB-IoT. We also look at the trade events and exhibitions we have coming up in 2018 and as always give you a quick tip on getting the most out of your Jasper Portal.

  • Telstra Cat-M1 Network Access on M2M One

Telstra launched their Cat-M1 IoT network back in August 2017 enabling devices with Cat-M1 capabilities to access the network anywhere 4GX (B28) coverage was available. This was great, but mainly for developers and R&D houses experimenting with new technology and not something that would affect the wider IoT/M2M community in Australia until these devices became more ubiquitous.

Now there are some commercially available modules and products that use Cat-M1 on the market we wanted to remind customers that M2M One SIM Cards work with Cat-M1 straight out of the box, if you have an M1 capable modem or module in your device you can use your existing SIM cards today without any changes being made.

  • Telstra launch NB-IoT Network in Australia

Some of you may have already seen that at CES 2018 in January Telstra officially announced they have turned on NB-IoT capability in major cities and some regional hubs across Australia. This marks the first stage of Telstra’s roll-out of the latest standard in LPWAN technology on the cellular side.

At the moment there are very few NB-IoT compatible devices available and the Telstra NB-IoT network is currently only available on the 1800Mhz frequency but now is the perfect time to begin thinking about your next generation of device.

Each month we bring you tips and tricks for getting the most value out of the M2M Control Centre.

Managing Voice Usage

This month we look at how you can make the most of utilizing voice on your M2M One SIM Cards and how to protect yourself against bill-shock by using Automation Rules.

By default M2M One SIM Cards come with SMS, Voice & International Roaming disabled but these features can be added at any time by our support team.

When you activate voice on your SIM(s) you then have 3 pricing options to choose from – PAYG, 1 Minute Bundle & 10 Minute Bundles. With the 1 & 10 Minute bundles these can be grouped across your account, the same as data plans so if you have 10 x 10 minute bundles you have 100 minutes of voice to use across your devices in a month – Voice pricing is available on our price table

With voice usage M2M One only charge for MO (Mobile Originating) or Outbound voice calling, receiving calls to your SIM is free of charge.

When you have voice available on your SIM we strongly recommend putting protections in place through automation rules, the automation rules allow you to alert or block a SIM if it exceeds a certain level of voice usage in a month.
For example you may have your SIMs in a device that dials in once every day for 1 minute so you expect to use 30-35 minutes of voice per month, you might want to set up a rule that alerts you if you use 60 minutes of voice in a month and suspends the SIM if it uses over 120 minutes of voice.
