Welcome to M2M One’s October 2018 Newsletter,

Well it’s that time of year has again, a few weeks ago Telstra held its annual Vantage conference and as always it was a very impressive spectacle. There were a lot of very impressive demonstrations this year including a working 5G Hot-spot with constant download speeds over 3000Mbps.

Telstra had its drones on display demonstrating their ability to provide 4G Hot-spots and cellular reception during emergencies, even using cameras to help law enforcement in such times.

M2M One obviously has a focus on the M2M (Machine to Machine) and IoT (Internet of things) industries and hence it is no surprise that one of the most interesting announcement to me was the official launch of Telstra’s NB-IoT (NB-1) network.

Telstra have now launched their NB-IoT network on the Band 28 (700MHz) frequency.  There is also a new mapping tool (available at https://www.telstra.com.au/business-enterprise/solutions/internet-of-things/iot-coverage) that shows the current coverage.

Telstra NB-IoT has some very interesting use cases – and will be able to deliver low powered, message style communications. Opening up many new possibilities for battery powered devices, from simple once a day tracking (containers etc) to access controls and data logging all for a very low price.

We’re working closely with Telstra on finalising pricing for NB-IoT as well as M2M One Control centre integration which we expect to be able to release this side of Christmas.

  • Telstra 2100Mhz 3G Shutdown Notice

Telstra has begun to re-farm their 3G 2100MHz Frequency. Current plans are to have the full shutdown completed by March 2019.

What this means is that any devices that are operating exclusively on the 3G 2100MHz frequency will lose connectivity once the towers in their area are switched off.

Why the SHUT DOWN of 2100MHz?

With much of the consumer and business market moving their cellular devices to the LTE (4G & 4GX), only a minuscule proportion of Telstra’s mobile traffic currently operate on the 3G 2100MHz frequency. This frequency is being re-purposed or “re-farmed” to be used by the 4GX network. By doing this Telstra can shift their cellular capacity to where there is stronger customer demand.

What can you do now?

The first step is check if your devices can utilise the 3G 850MHz Band. Often devices enabled for 3G are “Dual-band” which means they can use either 850MHz or 2100MHz. Sometimes devices are ‘pointed’ towards 2100MHz and simply need re-programming for 850MHz operation.

If your devices operate on 3G 850MHz (or are LTE / 4G) then there is nothing to do.

If your device is not capable of using the 3G 850Hz Frequency, you will need to speak to your hardware supplier in order to upgrade your device for 3G 850MHz or preferably for LTE (4G/4GX). In this case M2M One advises devices enabled for 700MHz (Band 28) & 1800MHz (Band 3).

  • M2M One Event Report – All Energy 2018

M2M One were again excited to be a part of the 10th Annual All Energy and Waste Expo in Melbourne this October.  As always there was a heavy focus on Clean and Renewable Energy with a huge array of International manufacturers of solar powers panels and inverters; However, it was truly great to see a large number of local Australian companies and installers presenting their wares, many of them already partnering with M2M One for their SIM Connectivity needs.

A recurring conversation we had at the show was from customers having issues with independent remote access to their inverters/solar panels; This is a common issue we see in the market.  The native connectivity these devices generally come with from the manufacturers is WiFi and the installers are expected to connect the inverter to the customers local WiFi.

The problem: 
Have you ever had an issue connecting to a local WiFi network?  Add to that the complications that you have no control over said network.  If the network goes down, or the password is changed etc then you have no way to contact your device and get the data out.  In a business where this data is what you are selling it becomes a huge problem!

This problem is not exclusive to the Energy industry – This is true of all devices deployed in the market that are connected to a network which you have no control over.

The Solution:
Luckily there is a fairly simple solution.  A cellular router (a selection are available from our sister company www.m2mconnectivity.com.au) and an M2M One SIM card.

Each month we bring you tips and tricks for getting the most value out of the M2M Control Centre.

How to create an automation rule to manage excess usage on a SIMThis month we look at using the powerful Automation Rules in CISCO Jasper to suspend a SIM card using excessive data with the option to reactivate the SIM if needed, instead of needing to contact M2M One Support.

When you log into the control centre select Automation from the home page

From the automation rules screen click on + Create New button to create a new automation rule

From here select Usage Monitoring as the rule category then select Cycle to Date Data Usage to create a new rule that will be triggered on data usage in a billing month. The example below shows you the correct set-up for triggering a rule to Deactivate a SIM that has used over 1MB of data in a billing month. With this rule when a SIM gets deactivated, if you need to use it again in the month you can simply change the SIM status in the control centre back to Activated to use it again – No need to get M2M One to unblock it.

Welcome to M2M One’s May 2018 Newsletter,

This month M2M One are exhibiting at the inaugural Melbourne MegaTrans event from 10-12 May at Melbourne Convention Centre. At this show we’ll be talking about how customers in transport and logistics are improving their monthly spend on communications by switching to M2M One and getting more control over their SIM fleet.

Straight after MegaTrans we’ll be hopping on a plane to Sydney for CeBIT Australia 2018, 15-17 May at ICC Darling Harbour, Sydney. As Australia’s premier ICT and Technology event we’ll be using CeBIT to talk to customers about how M2M One SIMs are the perfect solution for business continuity and failover when paired with intelligent routing solutions like Cradlepoint.

  • CISCO Jasper SSL Renewal

M2M One’s Control Centre partner CISCO Jasper will be renewing the SSL certificate on the control centre on Tuesday 15th of May. This change won’t affect access to the control centre or usage of the platform, however if you embed the CISCO Jasper SSL key in your API integration then you will need to update to the latest version.

  • Updated Pricing

We’ll be implementing new pricing for customers with over 10,000 active SIM cards in May, if you’d like more information about our bulk pricing please contact your account manager today.

  • Phasing out of CAP Data Plans

M2M One will begin phasing out our CAP Data plans over the next two months. M2M One originally implemented the CAP Data Plans as a way of protecting our customers against overage by locking the SIM card when it reaches its data allowance. As CISCO Jasper have improved their platform and automation rules these plans have become cumbersome for customers to manage and cause more issues than solutions in most cases.
We’ll be working with customers over the next two months to make sure that we implement excess and data management rules so you enjoy the same level of excess protection with the added bonus of group data pooling.

SIM LogisticsThis month we explain how M2M One SIMs are delivered and activated.

By default when M2M One ship SIM cards to you, they will be loaded automatically into your control centre in a state called Test Ready.

When a SIM is in this state it is live and provisioned to use the Telstra mobile network, however the SIM doesn’t become billable until you use either 20KBs of data, 4 SMS or any amount of voice calling.

This means you can hold a large stock of SIMs and use them whenever you need them without needing to call, email or even press a button to get connected.

Welcome to M2M One’s September Newsletter,

This month we were pleased to be invited along to the Melbourne leg of M2M Connectivity’s LPWAN Roadshow. Traveling around Australia during September – November the team from M2M Connectivity have put together presentations from key partners to discuss Cat-M1, NBIoT (NB-1), LoRA & SigFox. These short breakfast sessions are a great introduction to LPWAN and have helped many of our customers already make some decisions on where their technology is going in the next 5 years.

In this months newsletter we give you an important update on securing your devices, provide an update on public holiday hours, invite you to join us at our next trade events All Energy Australia 2017 in October & Wearable Technologies in December and provide an update on the new look M2M Control Centre.

  • Security Update – Public IP Address Vulnerability

This month M2M One has seen increased malicious activity targeting customers with public-facing IP addresses on their devices – These are any devices using the telstra.extranet APN

At M2M One we strongly advise all customers to avoid using a public IP address at all costs by using TCP callback on the public internet APNs or configuring your devices to use M2M One’s private APN solution IPX – Click here to read our blog on IP Addressing for IoT

If for some reason your application absolutely can not work without a public-facing IP address make sure you have at a minimum changed the default username and password on your modem – The majority of malicious traffic we see is constantly trying to access devices using common login information like admin/admin and if they access your devices we’ve seen a host of unpleasant scenarios, for example:

  • Locking customers out of devices and/or wiping all data and config settings
  • Using the device as a backdoor into a corporate network
  • Posting live camera feeds from security devices to the internet
  • Hijacking devices and turning them into SMS gateways
  • Pushing large files through to increase or blow data allowances.

Please also keep in mind that even if your device isn’t compromised the constant attempts to access the device will increase your data usage exponentially as your device is sending rejection messages over the mobile network.

  • M2M One Head Office Closure – Friday 29th September 2017

M2M One’s Melbourne head office will be closed on Friday, September 29th due to the Grand Final Eve public holiday in Victoria.

SIM Orders: Any SIM card orders received after 3:30 pm on Thursday 28th of September will be shipped on Monday 2nd of October.

When you logged into the CISCO Jasper M2M Control Centre you will have noticed prompts to update to the latest version of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) as part of the Control Centre 7.0 update.

For customers who may have clicked this option and want to revert back to the ‘Classic’ view please see the steps below to switch between the new and old version of the GUI.

Step 1 – When you first log into control centre you will notice a new option in the top right hand corner of the screen called ‘Launch Refresh Preview’ clicking this option will load the new version of the interface.

Step 2 – Once you are in the new interface you can return to the older version by hovering over the ‘Refresh Preview’ menu option in the top right corner and then clicking ‘Return to Classic View’ from the drop-down options.

Step 3 – Upon clicking ‘Return to Classic View’ you will be prompted to provide feedback on the new interface, please feel free to leave feedback and press Send or alternatively click the ‘Maybe Later’ option to return to the classic view.

Welcome to M2M One’s February 2017 Newsletter!

We’re already 2 months in to 2017 and the M2M & IoT world is as exciting as ever, with carriers and module manufactures expected to announce plans for LTE, NB-IoT & 5G services at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.

In this month’s newsletter we talk about some pricing changes coming to our M2M One Global SIM cards, email alerts to give you more visibility over your Group Data Plans, manging customer allocations in the M2M Control Centre and finally a special offer from our friends across the water at M2M One NZ.

  • M2M One Global SIM Price Review

Last year we launched our first Global Roaming SIM card for use in multiple markets across the world, allowing M2M One to support Australian customers who are deploying units internationally.
We’ve been working with our underlying carrier partner on coverage and rates and we’re pleased to announce that we have new pricing available for our global SIMs including tiered pricing similar to our domestic Australian plans.

  • Group Data Plan Management

While M2M One do offer individual CAP data plans we strongly recommend all customers utilize the power of Group Data – This allows you to share the data allowance of each SIM card on the same plan across your entire fleet (e.g 100x 5MB SIMs = 500MB)

While M2M One are still waiting for native group plan monitoring within Control Centre we have built a daily pooled usage digest that can give you an overview of how much of your pool you are currently utilizing. Each month we bring you tips and tricks for getting the most value out of the M2M Control Centre.

End Customer/Cost Centre Allocation

This month we look at updating the End Customer field in the M2M Control Centre – This allows you to keep customer information that can be searched and filtered against each SIM card in your account.

Updating the End Customer field can be done in 2 ways:

  1. Manually – You can update this information individually by going into the Service Listing in control centre and clicking on an individual ICCID number. This will bring up the Additional Information section – From here click the End Consumer tab. Any information you enter in here will be saved against the SIM card, however only information entered against End Customer will display in the Service Listing.
  2. Bulk update – Control Centre allows you to bulk update information by uploading a formatted Excel spreadsheet. To perform a bulk upload, create a spreadsheet in Excel with two columns, the first should read ICCID (this column should contain your SIM numbers) the second column should read End Consumer ID (under this column you can input your customer name data). Once you’ve prepared your spreadsheet navigate to the Service Listing and click the Batch Update tab from there follow the prompts to upload your custom data.

Happy New Year and welcome to M2M One’s January 2017 Newsletter!

This month we’re looking at kicking off the new year with a new look newsletter, talking about the future of 2G networks in Australia, looking at issues arising from using public IP addressing on your devices and providing some tips to improve SIM security using the M2M Control Centre.

  • Australian 2G Networks

As most of you will be well aware of all Australian mobile networks are in the process of shutting down their 2G/GSM networks.

On December 1st 2016 Telstra completed their shutdown of the 2G (900Mhz) Mobile Network across Australia. This now leaves only the Optus and Vodafone networks available for 2G devices, with a view that all remaining 2G coverage will be closed and re-farmed for LTE by 30th September 2017.

To continue operating M2M/IoT devices on the M2M One/Telstra network in Australia you need to make sure that the device contains a module capable connecting to 850Mhz 3G and for optimal coverage 850/2100Mhz 3G (Devices only able to connect to 2100Mhz will not work effectively on the Telstra network, 850Mhz is a requirement for a 3G connection)

  • Public IP Address Issues

Throughout 2016 we have seen a significant increase in the amount of malicious occurring on M2M devices with IP addresses exposed to the public internet (Devices using telstra.extranet as their APN) – These attacks can range from port sniffing or DDoS activity that can significantly increase your mobile data usage to unsecured devices being hijacked or tampered with.

M2M One strongly advise all of our customers to avoid using public IP addressing at all costs – An alternative to using telstra.extranet is to use M2M One’s IPX service which provides a private static IP that can be accessed through a secure IPSEC connection – more details available on our blog (click here)

If for some reason you absolutely have to use a public IP address we recommend taking the following actions to protect yourself:

  • Change the default username and password for any access interfaces on your device.
  • Work with M2M One to set-up limits and notifications on your SIM cards to be notified of increased activity.
  • Don’t leave your device online when idle.
  • If you notice malicious activity force your device to change it’s IP address by restarting or terminating the session.

SIM Security

This month we look at adding more security to your SIM deployment using some of the alerts and automation rules available in the control centre.

IMEI Change – When a device first connects to the control centre the IMEI information is automatically populated. M2M One can establish a rule that will either notify by email or suspend a service if this IMEI changes at any point. This can be useful to protect your SIMs from misuse in other devices.

Usage Alerts – M2M One can set-up alerts to notify or suspend a service for excessive use of Data, SMS or Voice functionality. This can be useful to protect you against overage or to alert you of possible misuse or malfunction.

Roaming Usage – By default all M2M One SIMs have roaming disabled by default, however there are cases where you may need roaming added to a SIM to test overseas. M2M One can set-up alerts for high usage or registration in an unauthorized zone when roaming is enabled to protect you against high roaming fees.

At present all new rules and alerts need to be created and applied on your behalf by M2M One support (support@m2mone.com.au) while Jasper complete upgrade works on the automation section of the control centre.
