Welcome to M2M One’s August 2018 Newsletter,

This month we’re inviting you to join us and the IoT Alliance of Australia at the inaugural IoT Impact conference at Sydney University of Technology in September.
We’re also talking about Telstra device certification and how it affects your M2M One SIM service, how to manage your IP Address in control centre and a small update on NB-IoT testing.

  • NB-IoT SIM Trial Update

The Telstra NB-IoT test network can now be accessed on all M2M One SIM cards using the telstra.internet APN

The NB-IoT test network is still currently only available for use on compatible NB-IoT LTE B3 modules as B28 coverage has not yet started (expecting in the next 6 months)

While Telstra are still in testing and have yet to confirm a commercial ‘messaging’ model for NB-IoT transactions using the NB-IoT network will be rated as traditional data and charged according to our standard rates and terms.

  • Telstra Certification and M2M One SIMs

Recently we’ve had a number of customers building new product ask us how Telstra’s certification process affects their device usage with M2M One.

To use the M2M One network in Australia your device needs to meet the following requirements:

  • 3G devices must support 850Mhz (Telstra NextG)
  • 4G/LTE devices must support either B3 or B28 (4GX) – Ideally your device should support both
  • All devices must have Australian RCM Approval – We recommend using a registered Australian testing laboratory like Comtest

As you can see Telstra certification is not a requirement to utilize our SIM cards. However, a Telstra approved M2M/IoT device has been thoroughly tested by Telstra for use on their network and will be supported much quicker when M2M One engage Telstra support on your behalf as they have a basic working knowledge of the device.

Managing SIM IP Addressing

This month we look at the various IP address options available using M2M One SIM Cards.

Dynamic NAT IP – APNs: telstra.m2m & telstra.internet

If you are using our standard internet access services your active SIM cards will be issued with a dynamic IP address behind a NAT Firewall meaning you are unable to initiate communication directly with this SIM using the IP address.

If your SIM card initiates contact with your host server first then you can manage bi-directional communications over the active session.

To find out the current IP of an active SIM card click on the ICCID of the SIM in the Services List and scroll down to the Current Session section


Private Static IP – APNs: m2mone.com.au & m2mone.ipx

For customers using our Private Static IP service or IPX (Click here for more information) your SIM cards will be allocated a static IP address from your registered pool of IPs. This IP will not change even a SIM session is terminated and restarted, meaning you can directly address your SIM cards using the same IP every time.

To find the allocated static IP of your SIM card simply look at the IPX Address field in the Services List (This field is only populated if you are purchasing IPX services from M2M One)

Welcome to M2M One’s July Newsletter,

In this month’s newsletter we invite you to join us at Security 2018 at the Melbourne Convention Centre to talk about the latest security innovations in IoT & M2M. We’ll also be at the Australian Vending Machine Expo talking to customers about how our SIMs are supporting the vending industry across Australia.

With Telstra starting to tune down their 2100Mhz 3G network (See our previous newsletter) we’ve had lots of questions from customers about how to make sure their devices are built for the longest possible shelf life when using M2M One SIM Cards.

Telstra’s primary 3G frequency and the one they market as Next G is 850Mhz, while they do use 2100Mhz for additional capacity in populated urban areas now the majority of consumer devices are on LTE they have started to shut down 2100Mhz across Australia, as we previously advised.

Telstra’s primary frequency on LTE is B28 (700Mhz) and this is what they are marketing as 4GX in the consumer space. This will also be the frequency they run IoT technologies on (Cat-M1 & NB-IoT) in the long term. The B28 4G network has been built from rural Australia inwards so wherever you see rural 4G coverage it will more than likely be on B28.
Telstra also use B3 (1800Mhz) which was used for the early LTE networks deployed in major urban areas, this network is also being built outwards into rural areas for capacity and load balance.

For the maximum coverage, capacity and lifespan with M2M One SIM cards we strongly recommend a 850Mhz 3G & dual B28/B3 LTE modem.

  • NB-IoT SIM Trial SIM Cards

M2M One are now able to offer limited trial SIMs for testing compatible NB-IoT devices, these SIM cards come in Standard, Micro & Nano form factors and are limited to 3 per customer.

There are some limitations to the current implementation of NB-IoT which need to be considered

  • These SIMs only work on the Telstra NB-IoT network and have no access to 3G, 4G or Cat-M1 at present
  • NB-IoT is currently only available on B3 (1800Mhz)
  • Modems and Modules must specifically be capable of NB-IoT communication
  • Coverage is limited to major cities at this time
  • NB-IoT does not support SMS or Voice

  • Support for Madison Technologies Privonet customers

M2M One are excited to be working with Madison Technologies to support their customers transitioning away from the now discontinued Privonet VPN solution.

If you’re currently using the Privonet VPN solution Madison have published a comprehensive guide on their website on how to transition your service to M2M One’s IPX environment

Welcome to M2M One’s June Newsletter,

This month M2M One are proud to have once again been nominated to represent Victorian ICT companies in the annual Victorian Government trade mission to CommunicAsia in Singapore. We’re excited to join the mission and connect with IoT thought leaders in SE Asia and see what new developments are coming from the region.

In the newsletter this month we have an update on Telstra’s plans around 3G longevity in Australia as well as impact on the 2100Mhz frequency.

We’ve now also finished the work to phase out our old CAP data plans, from 1st of June M2M One will only offer Group Data plans to customers and will help configure automation rules to make sure excess is managed.

  • Telstra 3G Sunset update & 2100Mhz Frequency

When Telstra completed their 2G shutdown on December 1st 2016 we advised customers that for longevity of 3G all devices must support 850Mhz 3G as a minimum (See our original letter here) This is because the 2100Mhz frequency operated by Telstra was only ever designed to support additional capacity in populated areas and never as a primary frequency for deployment.

Telstra have now confirmed that as part of their tuning activities in preparation for the larger 3G shutdown they are reducing capacity on the 2100Mhz across the country – Any customers using M2M One services in a 2100Mhz only device are advised to upgrade to a 850Mhz 3G or 4G/LTE compatible device as soon as possible to avoid disruption.

Telstra’s official statement on 2100Mhz is below:

“Since the launch of Next G ® network in 2006 any 3G2100MHz cells we have deployed were for capacity only (not coverage) and with the dissolution of the 3GIS partnership in 2012 any 3G 2100MHz cells were generally only retained where there was a pressing need for additional 3G capacity on top of the 3G coverage layer using 850MHz. From that time forward there has been little contiguous 3G2100 coverage. The closure of 2G in 2016 would have left any residual 2100-only devices with very fragmentary coverage. What remains is now is being gradually decommissioned so the spectrum can be re-farmed to 4G technology.”

Longer term with 850Mhz 3G, Telstra’s statement remains:

“Telstra intends that the 3G network will remain in service until at least 2020. Closure activities may commence from 2020 although initially this is more likely to be simple re-purposing of part of the 3G spectrum (as 3G capacity becomes freed from migration to 4G) with no material impacts on our 3G customer base. Full or partial geographic closure may occur any time after 2020, but would be unlikely before 2022. In any case we will provide a reasonable notice period of any shutdown activities that would impact end customers. Full closure is most certainly expected well before 2030. So somewhere between 2020 and 2030 the 3G network will be shut down but precisely when has not yet been decided”

  • New M2M One Pricing and removal of CAP Data Plans

As advised in our previous newsletter M2M One have now phased out CAP Data Plans from our service offering. M2M One has never been happy with the way the hard cap worked, and the issues it caused with customers end devices – We’ve been working on alternative methods of providing the reliability and excess management of the CAP plans while adding more flexibility back in the customers hands.

We’re now pleased to offer customers a complete managed service for excess usage management. Our Melbourne account team are now viewing customers accounts in real time and as soon as we see you breaching your data pool you’ll recieve a call or email immiediately with clear action steps to reduce any excess costs.

For customers who still want to limit the ammount of data each SIM card can use, we can assist you with setting up automation rules on the CISCO Jasper control centre – To get help or training on the platform please contact your account manager.

How to create an automation rule to manage excess usage on a SIM

This month we look at using the powerful Automation Rules in CISCO Jasper to replicate the CAP function of our old plans but giving you the control to reactivate the SIM if needed, instead of needing to contact M2M One Support.

When you log into the control centre select Automation from the home page

From the automation rules screen click on + Create New button to create a new automation rule

From here select Usage Monitoring as the rule category then select Cycle to Date Data Usage to create a new rule that will be triggered on data usage in a billing month. The example below shows you the correct set-up for triggering a rule to Deactivate a SIM that has used over 1MB of data in a billing month. With this rule when a SIM gets deactivated, if you need to use it again in the month you can simply change the SIM status in the control centre back to Activated to use it again – No need to get M2M One to unblock it.

Welcome to M2M One’s May 2018 Newsletter,

This month M2M One are exhibiting at the inaugural Melbourne MegaTrans event from 10-12 May at Melbourne Convention Centre. At this show we’ll be talking about how customers in transport and logistics are improving their monthly spend on communications by switching to M2M One and getting more control over their SIM fleet.

Straight after MegaTrans we’ll be hopping on a plane to Sydney for CeBIT Australia 2018, 15-17 May at ICC Darling Harbour, Sydney. As Australia’s premier ICT and Technology event we’ll be using CeBIT to talk to customers about how M2M One SIMs are the perfect solution for business continuity and failover when paired with intelligent routing solutions like Cradlepoint.

  • CISCO Jasper SSL Renewal

M2M One’s Control Centre partner CISCO Jasper will be renewing the SSL certificate on the control centre on Tuesday 15th of May. This change won’t affect access to the control centre or usage of the platform, however if you embed the CISCO Jasper SSL key in your API integration then you will need to update to the latest version.

  • Updated Pricing

We’ll be implementing new pricing for customers with over 10,000 active SIM cards in May, if you’d like more information about our bulk pricing please contact your account manager today.

  • Phasing out of CAP Data Plans

M2M One will begin phasing out our CAP Data plans over the next two months. M2M One originally implemented the CAP Data Plans as a way of protecting our customers against overage by locking the SIM card when it reaches its data allowance. As CISCO Jasper have improved their platform and automation rules these plans have become cumbersome for customers to manage and cause more issues than solutions in most cases.
We’ll be working with customers over the next two months to make sure that we implement excess and data management rules so you enjoy the same level of excess protection with the added bonus of group data pooling.

SIM LogisticsThis month we explain how M2M One SIMs are delivered and activated.

By default when M2M One ship SIM cards to you, they will be loaded automatically into your control centre in a state called Test Ready.

When a SIM is in this state it is live and provisioned to use the Telstra mobile network, however the SIM doesn’t become billable until you use either 20KBs of data, 4 SMS or any amount of voice calling.

This means you can hold a large stock of SIMs and use them whenever you need them without needing to call, email or even press a button to get connected.

  • SIMs for NB-IoT

At present M2M One SIM cards can access the full Telstra network for 3G, 4G/LTE and Cat-M1, while the NB-IoT network is still undergoing testing and integration M2M One can not provision existing SIM cards onto NB-IoT.
We will have access to NB-IoT enabled SIM cards shortly but will need to send you a new physical SIM card to utilize the network.

  • Global SIM Price Update

M2M One have negotiated some new volume based pricing and additional countries for our Global SIM service with our underlying carrier partners – For large deals or specific countries please contact your M2M One account manager for more information.

Troubleshooting SIM Performance – Diagnostics Tool

This month we look at how to utilize the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper for some quick insights into SIM performance.

When you run the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper it checks 4 elements:

  • Provisioning
  • SIM/Device
  • Network Connection
  • IP/Internet

Below is a quick guide to troubleshoot failures for each section:

Provisioning Failed – When you see this status it means your SIM card is simply not provisioned in a state that allows network activity in CISCO Jasper. This error will occur if your SIM cards are in any other state apart from Activated, Activation Ready or Test Ready. If you see this error, simply change the status of your SIM card in CISCO Jasper to the correct SIM State.

SIM/Device Failed – This error appears when the SIM is in a usable state in CISCO Jasper but is blocked at a network level, this typically happens when a SIM on a CAP plan has hit its data limit for the month or there has been a provisioning error at the M2M One side. If you see this error contact support@m2mone.com.au for immediate help.

Network Connection Failed – This error means that the SIM is provisioned correctly but can’t register onto the mobile network, this is typically caused by the following:

  • No power to the device
  • Incorrect frequency bands for the mobile network (Example no 850Mhz 3G for Telstra)
  • No mobile coverage in area
  • SIM card incorrectly inserted or SIM reader damaged
When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au
  1. Check power to the device, if the device is powered try cycling the power to the modem
  2. Check you have the supported mobile frequencies on your device and in your location
  3. Check our coverage map to see if you have coverage in your area
  4. Test the SIM in a mobile phone to see if it registers
  5. Reinsert the SIM and check the contacts on the SIM reader

IP/Internet Failed – This error means that the SIM has been able to register on the mobile network but can’t pass IP/Data traffic. This is typically caused by the following:

  • Incorrect or misspelled APN in the device
  • Limited power to the modem
  • Limited signal strength
  • Incorrect ports or sockets open on device
  • IPX Address incorrectly configured (IPX customers only)
When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au
  1. Check the APN(s) in the device are spelt correctly
  2. Check signal strength on the device
  3. Check power to the device
  4. Send any necessary SMS commands to force a modem reboot
