Telstra 3G (NextG) 850MHz Network Shutdown 

On October 9th 2019 Telstra officially announced that they would be shutting down the 3G/NextG 850MHz network across Australia in June 2024 (Exact date TBC)

What does this mean for M2M One customers?

  • Any M2M/IoT devices utilizing 3G (NextG) 850MHz modules or modems will cease functioning in June 2024.
  • To continue using the Telstra network in Australia all devices must utilize a modem or module that is at minimum compatible with LTE Band 28 (700MHz) which Telstra refers to as 4GX.
  • For optimal performance M2M One strongly recommends customers to deploy dual mode devices with access to LTE Band 3 (1800MHz) to provide maximum coverage.
  • As of October 2019 Telstra the LTE Band 28 (700MHz) network covers 99.2% population coverage and there are plans in place to increase coverage to have network parity with the current 3G network before June 2024.
  • While Telstra are maintaining the NextG network until June 2024, you may notice a reduction in coverage in some areas where tuning and re-farming is taking place.

How can M2M One help?

  • All M2M One SIM cards are compatible with the 3G and 4G/LTE network so you will not need to physically change any SIM cards from M2M One.
  • Over the next four years we will be collaborating with Telstra to identify any devices with 3G 850MHz IMEIs on the M2M One Control Centre – We will be sending all customers identified a listing with details of which devices are utilizing this hardware including IMSI & MSISDN.
  • M2M One will also be working with major modem and module brands to provide clear information on Telstra compatible LTE upgrade paths so you can choose the most cost effective option for your business.

What can I do to prepare?

  • Speak to your hardware supplier and ask them about their options for upgrading to 4G/LTE – If you develop or design circuit boards yourself make sure you speak to your module supplier about modifying your board.
  • We would highly recommend avoiding deployment of any further 3G hardware unless absolutely necessary.
  • Prepare a 4G/LTE migration plan and start discussing this with your customer base as soon as possible.

  • NB-IoT – Trials Continue.

We have previously updated everyone on where we are with Telstra progress on releasing the NB-IoT plan  (https://www.m2mone.com.au/m2m-one-february-2019-newsletter/). As more time passes we are getting closer to a commercial launch of the NB-IoT plans. As a further update we now have a number of customer successfully testing on the new telstra.iot APN.

We still have some remaining trial sims so if you would like to get started please get in touch to arrange.

Each month we bring you tips and tricks for getting the most value out of the M2M Control Centre.

Troubleshooting SIM Performance – Diagnostics Tool
This month we look at how to utilize the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper for some quick insights into SIM performance.
When you run the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper it checks 4 elements:
· ;Provisioning
· SIM/Device
· Network Connection
· IP/Internet

Below is a quick guide to troubleshoot failures for each section:

  • Provisioning Failed – When you see this status it means your SIM card is simply not provisioned in a state that allows network activity in CISCO Jasper. This error will occur if your SIM cards are in any other state apart from ActivatedActivation Ready or Test Ready.

If you see this error, simply change the status of your SIM card in CISCO Jasper to the correct SIM State.

  • SIM/Device Failed – This error appears when the SIM is in a usable state in CISCO Jasper but is blocked at a network level, this typically happens when a SIM on a CAP plan has hit its data limit for the month or there has been a provisioning error at the M2M One side.

If you see this error contact support@m2mone.com.au for immediate help.

  • Network Connection Failed – This error means that the SIM is provisioned correctly but can’t register onto the mobile network, this is typically caused by the following:

·         No power to the device
·         Incorrect frequency bands for the mobile network (Example no 850Mhz 3G for Telstra)
·         No mobile coverage in area
·         SIM card incorrectly inserted or SIM reader damaged

When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au

1.       Check power to the device, if the device is powered try cycling the power to the modem
2.       Check you have the supported mobile frequencies on your device and in your location
3.       Check our coverage map to see if you have coverage in your area
4.       Test the SIM in a mobile phone to see if it registers
5.       Reinsert the SIM and check the contacts on the SIM reader

  • IP/Internet Failed – This error means that the SIM has been able to register on the mobile network but can’t pass IP/Data traffic. This is typically caused by the following:

·         Incorrect or misspelled APN in the device
·         Limited power to the modem
·         Limited signal strength
·         Incorrect ports or sockets open on device
·         IPX Address incorrectly configured (IPX customers only)

When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au

1.       Check the APN(s) in the device are spelt correctly
2.       Check signal strength on the device
3.       Check power to the device
4.       Send any necessary SMS commands to force a modem reboot

Welcome to M2M One’s July Newsletter,

In this month’s newsletter we invite you to join us at Security 2018 at the Melbourne Convention Centre to talk about the latest security innovations in IoT & M2M. We’ll also be at the Australian Vending Machine Expo talking to customers about how our SIMs are supporting the vending industry across Australia.

With Telstra starting to tune down their 2100Mhz 3G network (See our previous newsletter) we’ve had lots of questions from customers about how to make sure their devices are built for the longest possible shelf life when using M2M One SIM Cards.

Telstra’s primary 3G frequency and the one they market as Next G is 850Mhz, while they do use 2100Mhz for additional capacity in populated urban areas now the majority of consumer devices are on LTE they have started to shut down 2100Mhz across Australia, as we previously advised.

Telstra’s primary frequency on LTE is B28 (700Mhz) and this is what they are marketing as 4GX in the consumer space. This will also be the frequency they run IoT technologies on (Cat-M1 & NB-IoT) in the long term. The B28 4G network has been built from rural Australia inwards so wherever you see rural 4G coverage it will more than likely be on B28.
Telstra also use B3 (1800Mhz) which was used for the early LTE networks deployed in major urban areas, this network is also being built outwards into rural areas for capacity and load balance.

For the maximum coverage, capacity and lifespan with M2M One SIM cards we strongly recommend a 850Mhz 3G & dual B28/B3 LTE modem.

  • NB-IoT SIM Trial SIM Cards

M2M One are now able to offer limited trial SIMs for testing compatible NB-IoT devices, these SIM cards come in Standard, Micro & Nano form factors and are limited to 3 per customer.

There are some limitations to the current implementation of NB-IoT which need to be considered

  • These SIMs only work on the Telstra NB-IoT network and have no access to 3G, 4G or Cat-M1 at present
  • NB-IoT is currently only available on B3 (1800Mhz)
  • Modems and Modules must specifically be capable of NB-IoT communication
  • Coverage is limited to major cities at this time
  • NB-IoT does not support SMS or Voice

  • Support for Madison Technologies Privonet customers

When you log into the control centre select Admin from the front page

When the admin page has loaded click on Users from the left hand menu

Welcome to M2M One’s October Newsletter,

It was great to get such a positive response to our last month’s newsletter, where we talked about the risks of running an M2M/IoT device with a public IP address (If you missed our September newsletter click here). Seeing customers taking more initiative and control over these vulnerabilities will help strengthen the growth of the IoT industry in general and hopefully one day stop these security ‘horror stories’ that slow down the adoption of remote technology.

Keeping up with last months attempt to assist with common M2M/IoT problems we wanted to take some time in this month’s newsletter to talk about compatible frequencies for use in Australia, particularly on the M2M One Network.

We’re also talking about the new Automation Rules available to customers in CISCO Jasper 7.0, offering a brief reminder about an upcoming public holiday and inviting you to join us at our last event of 2017, Wearable Technology in Sydney.

  • 3G & 4G Devices on the M2M One Network in Australia

In the aftermath of the 2G shutdown of all major networks in Australia we’re seeing more and more customers bringing hardware into Australia that they have been told is 3G or 4G/LTE compatible. Unfortunately in a lot of cases what is being sold has been misrepresented as being compatible with Australian Mobile Networks.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people purchasing a device that is 850/2100Mhz but only GSM, this is a 2G technology – To operate on the M2M One/Telstra network in Australia you must make sure that your 3G device supports 850Mhz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSPA+

Telstra Certification – While its not mandatory for devices using the M2M One network to be Telstra Certified it does mean that when purchasing a module or modem you can be confident that it will work on our network. You can download a list of Telstra Certified devices by clicking here or speaking to a provider of certified hardware like M2M Connectivity.

  • CISCO Jasper M2M Control Centre 7.0 Update – Automation Rules

As part of the Control Centre 7.0 upgrade to the M2M Control Centre we are now pleased to offer Automation Rules to M2M One customers. You’ll find more information in the Control Centre Tips section of this email

  • M2M One Head Office Closure – Tuesday 7th November 2017

M2M One’s Melbourne head office will be closed on Tuesday November 7th due to the Melbourne Cup Day public holiday in Victoria.

SIM Orders: Any SIM card orders received after 3:30pm on Monday 6th of November will be shipped on Wednesday 8th of November.

As part of the 7.0 release of Control Centre we are pleased to announce a feature that has been requested for some time – M2M One customers now have access create and manage Automation Rules for SIM cards.Automation Rules can help you monitor and manage excess usage, SIM changes and secure your SIMs against unauthorized use.

Cat-M1 IoT Network Access from M2M One

M2M One SIM Cards now work on Telstra’s Cat M1 IoT Network

As of September 2017 all SIM Cards provided by M2M One now have access to the full Telstra IoT Network in addition to 3G & 4G coverage.

The Cat M1 service operates on Telstra’s 4GX network which utilizes band 28 (700Mhz) and can only be accessed by Cat M1 compatible 4G devices.

Coverage Disclaimer

M2M One SIM Cards are powered by the Telstra mobile network and as such are subject to Telstra’s coverage, service and network uptime – See below:

Device coverage depends on where you are, the device you are using and whether it has an external antenna attached.

You should be aware that the Telstra coverage maps displayed have been created using tools that predict the likely areas of outdoor coverage. We have not individually tested every particular location within the identified coverage areas for coverage, nor any indoor locations or sub-surface areas. This means that while the footprint of coverage outlined on the maps is generally accurate, there will be specific areas described as being within a coverage area where your device will not work. This is a common characteristic of wireless systems. For example, actual coverage could be degraded or not existent in specific locations due to certain physical structures or geographic features or as a result of the device used. Physical structures which may block or inhibit coverage could include basements, lifts, underground car parks, concrete buildings, tunnels and road cuttings. The specific nature of building materials used in an office or dwelling also impacts on the coverage within, with some materials such as steel framing and metallic window films having a significant impact on coverage within a building. Geographic features which may block or inhibit coverage could include formations such as hills and mountains or even trees.

The offshore coverage shown is only indicative of where a device may operate. Factors beyond Telstra’s control such as the weather, tides, sea conditions and your antenna installation (type and height of antenna above sea level) can significantly influence the actual user experience of coverage, data speed and performance. Public mobile networks must not be relied upon as a primary method of emergency communication at sea.

Data speeds experienced on Telstra’s mobile networks may be affected by network availability, the type and configuration of customer equipment, or device used, the performance of external networks (for example the Internet), the signal strength available to the device, and other factors such as the type of application.

What is LTE Cat M1?

LTE Cat M1 is a low‑power wide‑area (LPWA) technology that supports M2M & IoT devices with low to medium data requirements with average upload and download speeds of 375 kb/s.

Unlike the other LPWA 4G standard NB‑IoT, LTE Cat M1 can be used for mobile IoT/M2M devices, as it handles hand‑over between cell towers in a similar fashion to LTE . For example, if a device crossed between several different network towers, a Cat M1 can maintain the connection similar to a normal 4G or 3G device. However an NB‑IoT device needs to re‑establish a new connection for each new location.

Unlike NB-IoT, Cat M1 also supports  voice functionality via VoLTE (voice over LTE), which means it can be used for applications like man-down alarms, elderly care, independent living and other applications requiring human interaction.

Where can I purchase Cat M1 IoT/M2M Products?

As Cat M1 technology is still a fairly new technology there are limited options for total finished product and instead you may need to build your product from a board level using a Cat M1 Module.

  • uBlox – Provide Cat M1 Modules in the SARA R4 Line
