In this edition we have a wrap up from last week’s Security show in Sydney.  We also have some good news about revised pricing for our higher end data plans that should reduce monthly costs for those of you using GB level plans.
As we head into a busy time for the industry we would like to remind all our customers that we are here to help manage your fleet of data sims.

  • Pricing

We are happy to announce that we have a reduction to the price of the higher end data plans (500MB and above) effective from 1st July 2019. 
At a base rate our prices have dropped by an average of 10% across the larger GB+ plans.

  • M2M One at the Security Expo, Sydney

Once again M2M One exhibited at the Security Exposition and Conference in Sydney ICC.  It was great to see this long running show still be so relevant to the security industry with a great deal of innovation in technology – Happily most of them employing M2M/IoT wireless communication!
As we have discussed in the past, one of the growth markets in the security space at the moment is the PTToC (Push to Talk Over Cellular) – where the two-way radio industry is being run over the existing cellular networks rather than dedicated radio towers.  This was again in high demand at this year’s show with a much higher knowledge about PTToC from customers and visitors seeking out information on these devices and suitable SIM card plans.
There is also a lot of working being done in the AI and Smart CCTV markets – All driving to the need for more available cellular networks for back-haul.  4G/LTE has allowed this to happen and having good control mechanisms (such as those provided by M2M One through CISCO Jasper’s strong SIM management layer) allows solution providers to be efficient in managing their data use across traditionally data-hungry devices.
The one area that still challenges many solutions providers is two way communications to the cameras.  Many of these cameras come from overseas with a simple instruction to get a publicly addressable sim.  These are 
a.       Hard to come in Australia and
b.       Very dangerous and should not be used.

National Road & Transport Expo focuses on road transport ecosystems including infrastructure, traffic management, smart mobility, parking and safety.  As with many other industries there is also a large amount of growth with M2M / IoT solutions in this industry and we look forward to being a part of the expo.  If you are in Melbourne come along and say hi – trade entry is free into the expo.

Adding new users

This month we look at how to add new users to your control centre account and give them permission to view or manage your SIM cards.
When you log into the control centre select Admin from the front page

When the admin page has loaded click on Users from the left hand menu
When the user page has loaded click Create New – 

Follow the prompts on screen to set-up a new user for your account

This month we’re inviting you to join us and the IoT Alliance of Australia at the inaugural IoT Impact conference at Sydney University of Technology in September.
We’re also talking about Telstra device certification and how it affects your M2M One SIM service, how to manage your IP Address in control centre and a small update on NB-IoT testing.

  • NB-IoT SIM Trial Update

The Telstra NB-IoT test network can now be accessed on all M2M One SIM cards using the telstra.internet APN

The NB-IoT test network is still currently only available for use on compatible NB-IoT LTE B3 modules as B28 coverage has not yet started (expecting in the next 6 months)

While Telstra are still in testing and have yet to confirm a commercial ‘messaging’ model for NB-IoT transactions using the NB-IoT network will be rated as traditional data and charged according to our standard rates and terms.

  • Telstra Certification and M2M One SIMs

Recently we’ve had a number of customers building new product ask us how Telstra’s certification process affects their device usage with M2M One.

To use the M2M One network in Australia your device needs to meet the following requirements:

  • 3G devices must support 850Mhz (Telstra NextG)
  • 4G/LTE devices must support either B3 or B28 (4GX) – Ideally your device should support both
  • All devices must have Australian RCM Approval – We recommend using a registered Australian testing laboratory like Comtest

As you can see Telstra certification is not a requirement to utilize our SIM cards. However, a Telstra approved M2M/IoT device has been thoroughly tested by Telstra for use on their network and will be supported much quicker when M2M One engage Telstra support on your behalf as they have a basic working knowledge of the device.

Managing SIM IP Addressing

This month we look at the various IP address options available using M2M One SIM Cards.

Dynamic NAT IP – APNs: telstra.m2m & telstra.internet

If you are using our standard internet access services your active SIM cards will be issued with a dynamic IP address behind a NAT Firewall meaning you are unable to initiate communication directly with this SIM using the IP address.

If your SIM card initiates contact with your host server first then you can manage bi-directional communications over the active session.

To find out the current IP of an active SIM card click on the ICCID of the SIM in the Services List and scroll down to the Current Session section

Private Static IP – APNs: m2mone.com.au & m2mone.ipx

For customers using our Private Static IP service or IPX (Click here for more information) your SIM cards will be allocated a static IP address from your registered pool of IPs. This IP will not change even a SIM session is terminated and restarted, meaning you can directly address your SIM cards using the same IP every time.

To find the allocated static IP of your SIM card simply look at the IPX Address field in the Services List (This field is only populated if you are purchasing IPX services from M2M One)

Welcome to M2M One’s June Newsletter,

This month M2M One are proud to have once again been nominated to represent Victorian ICT companies in the annual Victorian Government trade mission to CommunicAsia in Singapore. We’re excited to join the mission and connect with IoT thought leaders in SE Asia and see what new developments are coming from the region.

In the newsletter this month we have an update on Telstra’s plans around 3G longevity in Australia as well as impact on the 2100Mhz frequency.

We’ve now also finished the work to phase out our old CAP data plans, from 1st of June M2M One will only offer Group Data plans to customers and will help configure automation rules to make sure excess is managed.

  • Telstra 3G Sunset update & 2100Mhz Frequency

When Telstra completed their 2G shutdown on December 1st 2016 we advised customers that for longevity of 3G all devices must support 850Mhz 3G as a minimum (See our original letter here) This is because the 2100Mhz frequency operated by Telstra was only ever designed to support additional capacity in populated areas and never as a primary frequency for deployment.

Telstra have now confirmed that as part of their tuning activities in preparation for the larger 3G shutdown they are reducing capacity on the 2100Mhz across the country – Any customers using M2M One services in a 2100Mhz only device are advised to upgrade to a 850Mhz 3G or 4G/LTE compatible device as soon as possible to avoid disruption.

Telstra’s official statement on 2100Mhz is below:

“Since the launch of Next G ® network in 2006 any 3G2100MHz cells we have deployed were for capacity only (not coverage) and with the dissolution of the 3GIS partnership in 2012 any 3G 2100MHz cells were generally only retained where there was a pressing need for additional 3G capacity on top of the 3G coverage layer using 850MHz. From that time forward there has been little contiguous 3G2100 coverage. The closure of 2G in 2016 would have left any residual 2100-only devices with very fragmentary coverage. What remains is now is being gradually decommissioned so the spectrum can be re-farmed to 4G technology.”

Longer term with 850Mhz 3G, Telstra’s statement remains:

“Telstra intends that the 3G network will remain in service until at least 2020. Closure activities may commence from 2020 although initially this is more likely to be simple re-purposing of part of the 3G spectrum (as 3G capacity becomes freed from migration to 4G) with no material impacts on our 3G customer base. Full or partial geographic closure may occur any time after 2020, but would be unlikely before 2022. In any case we will provide a reasonable notice period of any shutdown activities that would impact end customers. Full closure is most certainly expected well before 2030. So somewhere between 2020 and 2030 the 3G network will be shut down but precisely when has not yet been decided”

  • New M2M One Pricing and removal of CAP Data Plans

As advised in our previous newsletter M2M One have now phased out CAP Data Plans from our service offering. M2M One has never been happy with the way the hard cap worked, and the issues it caused with customers end devices – We’ve been working on alternative methods of providing the reliability and excess management of the CAP plans while adding more flexibility back in the customers hands.

We’re now pleased to offer customers a complete managed service for excess usage management. Our Melbourne account team are now viewing customers accounts in real time and as soon as we see you breaching your data pool you’ll recieve a call or email immiediately with clear action steps to reduce any excess costs.

For customers who still want to limit the ammount of data each SIM card can use, we can assist you with setting up automation rules on the CISCO Jasper control centre – To get help or training on the platform please contact your account manager.

Each month we bring you tips and tricks for getting the most value out of the M2M Control Centre.

How to create an automation rule to manage excess usage on a SIM

This month we look at using the powerful Automation Rules in CISCO Jasper to replicate the CAP function of our old plans but giving you the control to reactivate the SIM if needed, instead of needing to contact M2M One Support.

When you log into the control centre select Automation from the home page

From the automation rules screen click on + Create New button to create a new automation rule

From here select Usage Monitoring as the rule category then select Cycle to Date Data Usage to create a new rule that will be triggered on data usage in a billing month. The example below shows you the correct set-up for triggering a rule to Deactivate a SIM that has used over 1MB of data in a billing month. With this rule when a SIM gets deactivated, if you need to use it again in the month you can simply change the SIM status in the control centre back to Activated to use it again – No need to get M2M One to unblock it.

  • Changes to M2M One Billing System

On March 1st 2018 M2M One completed our move to a new billing system, and there are a few changes that customers need to be aware of.

  1. Existing customers prior to Feb 2018 will be issued with a new account number – This will be printed on your invoice and should be used for all payment and accounting purposes.
  2. Any customers with stored credit card or bank details for direct debit will need to provide this information again. M2M One do not store customer payment details and they need to be entered directly into the new payment system.
  3. M2M One have a new online credit card portal – The payment portal can be accessed any time by clicking the Pay My Bill link on www.m2mone.com.au
  • Incoming Price Update for High Volume Customers

As your SIM business grows M2M One wants to make sure that we are able to support that growth by offering competitive data pricing at higher volumes. For those customers with opportunities of 20,000+ active services we have been negotiating with our underlying carrier partners some new rates that will help your business scale over time, we expect to have these implemented by May 2018 – For custom pricing please contact your account manager directly.

  • Global SIM Management Portal

After several months of development work with our carrier partner M2M One are pleased to offer customers using our Global SIM Cards the ability to view and manage those SIMs using a customer facing portal, just like you can with your Australian SIMs. With the Global SIM portal you can locate your SIMs anywhere in the world based on cell-tower information & monitor and set watchdogs for usage.

Manage Individual SIMs in a Group

This month we look at how you can get the excess control benefits of our CAP/fixed with the flexibility and pricing benefits of our Group Data Plans.

With M2M One Group Data Plans you can still use the Automation Rules available in the Control Centre to manage data usage on an individual SIM basis. For example you can put all of your SIM cards on a 500MB Group Data Plan giving each SIM 500MB of group data to contribute to their pool. If any SIM goes over their 500MB allowance they can borrow from the larger pool, this helps control excess usage costs and keeps your devices online.

With automation rules you can set an individual rule that states ‘Any SIM over XXXMB in a 24 hour or monthly period’ should be moved to Deactivated. This temporarily suspends any rogue SIMs that use more data than you expect but unlike the CAP/Fixed data plans gives you the ability to turn the SIM back on if needed by changing the SIM Status back to Activated.

The benefit of using this method vs the CAP/Fixed plan is that with the CAP plans any SIM that exceeds its data allowance gets a ‘hard suspension’ which completely disables the SIMs APN and Data function. This renders the SIM card completely useless until manually overridden by our support team. However, with the automation rules on group plans you stay in control of the SIM, and you can reactivate yourself any time without engaging our support team.

It was great to get such a positive response to our last month’s newsletter, where we talked about the risks of running an M2M/IoT device with a public IP address (If you missed our September newsletter click here). Seeing customers taking more initiative and control over these vulnerabilities will help strengthen the growth of the IoT industry in general and hopefully one day stop these security ‘horror stories’ that slow down the adoption of remote technology.

Keeping up with last months attempt to assist with common M2M/IoT problems we wanted to take some time in this month’s newsletter to talk about compatible frequencies for use in Australia, particularly on the M2M One Network.

We’re also talking about the new Automation Rules available to customers in CISCO Jasper 7.0, offering a brief reminder about an upcoming public holiday and inviting you to join us at our last event of 2017, Wearable Technology in Sydney.

  • 3G & 4G Devices on the M2M One Network in Australia

In the aftermath of the 2G shutdown of all major networks in Australia we’re seeing more and more customers bringing hardware into Australia that they have been told is 3G or 4G/LTE compatible. Unfortunately in a lot of cases what is being sold has been misrepresented as being compatible with Australian Mobile Networks.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people purchasing a device that is 850/2100Mhz but only GSM, this is a 2G technology – To operate on the M2M One/Telstra network in Australia you must make sure that your 3G device supports 850Mhz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSPA+

Telstra Certification – While its not mandatory for devices using the M2M One network to be Telstra Certified it does mean that when purchasing a module or modem you can be confident that it will work on our network. You can download a list of Telstra Certified devices by clicking here or speaking to a provider of certified hardware like M2M Connectivity.

  • CISCO Jasper M2M Control Centre 7.0 Update – Automation Rules

As part of the Control Centre 7.0 upgrade to the M2M Control Centre we are now pleased to offer Automation Rules to M2M One customers. You’ll find more information in the Control Centre Tips section of this email

  • M2M One Head Office Closure – Tuesday 7th November 2017

M2M One’s Melbourne head office will be closed on Tuesday November 7th due to the Melbourne Cup Day public holiday in Victoria.

SIM Orders: Any SIM card orders received after 3:30pm on Monday 6th of November will be shipped on Wednesday 8th of November.

Technical Support: M2M One will be limited to emergency technical support only, please raise a ticket by using support@m2mone.com.au

As part of the 7.0 release of Control Centre we are pleased to announce a feature that has been requested for some time – M2M One customers now have access create and manage Automation Rules for SIM cards.Automation Rules can help you monitor and manage excess usage, SIM changes and secure your SIMs against unauthorized use.
