This month’s newsletter comes with a personal note;
As many of you may already know I’ll be stepping down as General Manager at M2M One at the end of September and leaving the business.
It’s been amazing over the past 4 years to watch the business grow from 13,000 active SIM cards to over 160,000! and to go from 3 employees to 10. Working at M2M One I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the brightest minds in IoT/M2M and support customers building incredible applications.

The thing I’ve always been most proud of at M2M One has been our commitment to customer service and I’m pleased to see that trend continuing with Gideon Borden taking over management of the sales and customer service team. Gideon has always been a pillar of the M2M team with his commitment to solving problems and finding the right solutions for customers being second to none – Gideon can be contacted at gideon.borden@m2mone.com.au

From an operational standpoint one of the founders of M2M One and Australian IoT pioneer Darren Moroney will be taking over the day to day management of the business.   • Reminder on M2M One Cat-M1 Coverage

Over the past few months we’ve spent a lot of energy talking about NB-IoT and what’s coming and possible over the next 12 months but one of the elements getting overlooked is that M2M One has complete access already to Telstra’s nationwide Cat-M1 network today. The actions button combines several previously separate buttons/actions into a single button and offers different functionality depending on the page you are viewing. Some examples below:

This month M2M One are exhibiting and participating in a panel discussion at Convergence in Sydney, one of Australia’s leading conferences on innovation and disruption in the digital space. We’ll be joined by Thinxtra and Actility on a panel discussing IoT & LPWAN.

We’re starting to see pathways for cellular LPWAN take shape now with Cat-M1 devices now undergoing heavy testing in Australia and sample boards for NB-IoT starting to surface. M2M One are working to get access to NB-IoT SIM cards for testing for our customers ASAP

  • SIMs for NB-IoT

At present M2M One SIM cards can access the full Telstra network for 3G, 4G/LTE and Cat-M1, while the NB-IoT network is still undergoing testing and integration M2M One can not provision existing SIM cards onto NB-IoT.
We will have access to NB-IoT enabled SIM cards shortly but will need to send you a new physical SIM card to utilize the network.
If you require NB-IoT enabled SIM cards for testing please contact your account manager or respond to this email for more information.

  • Global SIM Price Update

M2M One have negotiated some new volume based pricing and additional countries for our Global SIM service with our underlying carrier partners – For large deals or specific countries please contact your M2M One account manager for more information.

Troubleshooting SIM Performance – Diagnostics Tool

This month we look at how to utilize the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper for some quick insights into SIM performance.

When you run the Diagnostic tool in CISCO Jasper it checks 4 elements:

  • Provisioning
  • SIM/Device
  • Network Connection
  • IP/Internet

Below is a quick guide to troubleshoot failures for each section:

Provisioning Failed – When you see this status it means your SIM card is simply not provisioned in a state that allows network activity in CISCO Jasper. This error will occur if your SIM cards are in any other state apart from Activated, Activation Ready or Test Ready. If you see this error, simply change the status of your SIM card in CISCO Jasper to the correct SIM State.

SIM/Device Failed – This error appears when the SIM is in a usable state in CISCO Jasper but is blocked at a network level, this typically happens when a SIM on a CAP plan has hit its data limit for the month or there has been a provisioning error at the M2M One side. If you see this error contact support@m2mone.com.au for immediate help.

Network Connection Failed – This error means that the SIM is provisioned correctly but can’t register onto the mobile network, this is typically caused by the following:

  • No power to the device
  • Incorrect frequency bands for the mobile network (Example no 850Mhz 3G for Telstra)
  • No mobile coverage in area
  • SIM card incorrectly inserted or SIM reader damaged
When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au
  1. Check power to the device, if the device is powered try cycling the power to the modem
  2. Check you have the supported mobile frequencies on your device and in your location
  3. Check our coverage map to see if you have coverage in your area
  4. Test the SIM in a mobile phone to see if it registers
  5. Reinsert the SIM and check the contacts on the SIM reader

IP/Internet Failed – This error means that the SIM has been able to register on the mobile network but can’t pass IP/Data traffic. This is typically caused by the following:

  • Incorrect or misspelled APN in the device
  • Limited power to the modem
  • Limited signal strength
  • Incorrect ports or sockets open on device
  • IPX Address incorrectly configured (IPX customers only)
When you see this error we recommend trying the following trouble shooting steps before contacting support@m2mone.com.au
  1. Check the APN(s) in the device are spelt correctly
  2. Check signal strength on the device
  3. Check power to the device
  4. Send any necessary SMS commands to force a modem reboot

Welcome to M2M One’s September Newsletter,

This month we were pleased to be invited along to the Melbourne leg of M2M Connectivity’s LPWAN Roadshow. Traveling around Australia during September – November the team from M2M Connectivity have put together presentations from key partners to discuss Cat-M1, NBIoT (NB-1), LoRA & SigFox. These short breakfast sessions are a great introduction to LPWAN and have helped many of our customers already make some decisions on where their technology is going in the next 5 years.

In this months newsletter we give you an important update on securing your devices, provide an update on public holiday hours, invite you to join us at our next trade events All Energy Australia 2017 in October & Wearable Technologies in December and provide an update on the new look M2M Control Centre.

  • Security Update – Public IP Address Vulnerability

This month M2M One has seen increased malicious activity targeting customers with public-facing IP addresses on their devices – These are any devices using the telstra.extranet APN

At M2M One we strongly advise all customers to avoid using a public IP address at all costs by using TCP callback on the public internet APNs or configuring your devices to use M2M One’s private APN solution IPX – Click here to read our blog on IP Addressing for IoT

If for some reason your application absolutely can not work without a public-facing IP address make sure you have at a minimum changed the default username and password on your modem – The majority of malicious traffic we see is constantly trying to access devices using common login information like admin/admin and if they access your devices we’ve seen a host of unpleasant scenarios, for example:

  • Locking customers out of devices and/or wiping all data and config settings
  • Using the device as a backdoor into a corporate network
  • Posting live camera feeds from security devices to the internet
  • Hijacking devices and turning them into SMS gateways
  • Pushing large files through to increase or blow data allowances.

Please also keep in mind that even if your device isn’t compromised the constant attempts to access the device will increase your data usage exponentially as your device is sending rejection messages over the mobile network.

  • M2M One Head Office Closure – Friday 29th September 2017

M2M One’s Melbourne head office will be closed on Friday, September 29th due to the Grand Final Eve public holiday in Victoria.

SIM Orders: Any SIM card orders received after 3:30 pm on Thursday 28th of September will be shipped on Monday 2nd of October.

Technical Support: M2M One will be limited to emergency technical support only, please raise a ticket by using support@m2mone.com.au

When you logged into the CISCO Jasper M2M Control Centre you will have noticed prompts to update to the latest version of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) as part of the Control Centre 7.0 update.

For customers who may have clicked this option and want to revert back to the ‘Classic’ view please see the steps below to switch between the new and old version of the GUI.

Step 1 – When you first log into control centre you will notice a new option in the top right hand corner of the screen called ‘Launch Refresh Preview’ clicking this option will load the new version of the interface.

Step 2 – Once you are in the new interface you can return to the older version by hovering over the ‘Refresh Preview’ menu option in the top right corner and then clicking ‘Return to Classic View’ from the drop-down options.

Step 3 – Upon clicking ‘Return to Classic View’ you will be prompted to provide feedback on the new interface, please feel free to leave feedback and press Send or alternatively click the ‘Maybe Later’ option to return to the classic view.

Welcome to M2M One’s June 2017 Newsletter,

We’re back after an exciting and successful CeBIT 2017 up in Sydney, it was great to meet so many people passionate about the future of M2M & IoT in Australia and we look forward to working with as many of you as possible.

One thing that really stood out was the number of questions we were getting about LPWAN technologies, it seems with the uncertainty around the lifespan of 3G/Next G in Australia many people are taking their time to look at the next logical upgrade path for their device – Do they jump to 4G/LTE as it exists today, do they wait for CAT M1 or do they hang on that bit longer for the ultra low bandwidth NB-IoT? Some people are questioning whether they stick with cellular or move to alternative technologies like SIGFOX, LoRA or even some of the new innovations coming from the satellite space.

We’ll be producing some articles on the evolution of wireless networks in the coming months but until then if you’re feeling confused about where to take your product next, get in touch – We’d love to hear from you.

  • M2M One Billing Portal Maintenance (23/6/2017)

Please note that on 23/6/2017 M2M One’s online billing portal will be down for scheduled maintenance from 10am – 2pm and will be unable for processing credit card payments. If you need to pay your invoice during this period please contact accounts@m2mone.com.au or call our office on 03 9696 3011.

  • EOFY SIM Card Orders

Using M2M One SIMs and Data Plans for redundancy & failover

M2M One SIMs are ideally designed for failover solutions, either over an ADSL link or dual SIM modem. Due to our unique cost strucure we can help you minimize the costs associated with operating a redundant SIM.

What are your options?

  1. Activation Ready – M2M One SIMs can be placed into a status called Activation Ready this stops all billing on the SIM but keeps it alive on the mobile network. As soon as data is passed through the SIM it becomes live and ‘billable’. This is a great solution for dormant SIMs that only need to be used in the event of a link failure.
  2. Managed Group Plans – As part of our ongoing service to customers M2M One manage and monitor pooled data usage on your account, with the pooled plans if one or more of your SIM cards exceeds the pool (i.e in a failover event) we can work with you to optimize the plans for the lowest cost in that month.
  3. Single Step Plans – For customers managing a single site or SIM we can create a rule that will automatically step a SIM up to the next plan when it exceeds a specific amount of data and suspending at 100GB of usage. This is an ideal solution for customers wanting a simple fixed cost solution that they can set and forget.

Locating your SIMs IP Address

This month we look at finding the IP Address of your SIM Card once its connected to the mobile network.

From Services > SIM List click on the ICCID number of any ‘In Session’ SIM card to load the Details screen. From the details screen you can see the current session information including the Session Start Time, Device IP Address and APN.

For customers using our IPX Static IP service you can locate the IP Address allocated to your SIM cards at any time by enabling the IPX Address column on the SIM List screen – This can be done by right clicking on any of the column headings in the SIM List and then ticking the IPX Address checkbox.

  • New M2M One Global SIM Pricing

Last year we launched our first Global Roaming SIM card for use in multiple markets across the world, allowing M2M One to support Australian customers who are deploying units internationally.
We’ve been working with our underlying carrier partner on coverage and rates and we’re pleased to announce that we have new pricing available for our global SIMs including tiered pricing similar to our domestic Australian plans.

  • M2M One Support 

M2M One run a dedicated staff of support engineers from our Melbourne head office, our team are experienced working with modems, modules and routers as well as troubleshooting cellular connection issues relating to M2M One SIM cards. If you are ever struggling with getting your M2M/IoT device up and running make sure you contact our friendly local support team.

You can submit a support request to M2M One at any time by emailing support@m2mone.com.au or calling our office on +61 3 9696 3011 during office hours (8:30am – 5:00pm AEST).

When submitting a support request please make sure to include the following information to help us quickly process the problem:

  • ICCID(s) or MSISDN(s) of the affected services
  • Approximate time the issues began
  • Approximate location of the affected services
  • Device being used, including cellular frequencies supported by the radio module
  • Best contact details for live troubleshooting

Additional Custom Fields

This month M2M One has added an additional 7 custom fields that can be populated with unique information to be recorded against each SIM card. These are in addition to the 5 unique custom fields that each customer can add and change to their account. With this update you can now record up to 12 columns of custom information against your SIM fleet.

To view the new custom fields all you need to do is ‘right click’ on any column heading in the Service View in the Control Centre. This will open a tick list of column headings, you can add or remove the columns you need including our new Customer Notes 1-7 fields.
